Frenchman Besson beats German Tornado elite

Travemuender Woche - Frenchman Besson beats German Tornado elite
TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(22-7-2003) The Tornado class had it’s sensation when the French team Billy Besson/Arnaud Jarlegan could win the fight against all German top teams in the 114th Travemuende Week.  Second place went to multiple World and European Champion Roland Gaebler with his new crew Gunnar Struckmann, equal in points with the third placed Andrew Landenberger/Johannes Polgar, all from Kiel, Germany.

The European Championship in the A-class catamarans is underway with nearly 80 starters. Scott Anderson from Australia leads after four races, with compatriot Glenn Ashby following in second place. The finals results in the Olympic Europe class went to Nina Vater (Gross Ossnig, Germany) followed by Janika Puls (Ratzeburg, Germany) and the US Americans Erin Maxwell/Jen Morgen won the 470 class.

In the beginning it was a clear round for the 17-year old Nina Vater, but winning the Europe class became a tight fight in the end, while Janika Puls came up, winning races six, seven nine and ten.  The 15-year old secured second place, leaving a very good impression. The two girls are packing their boats now for the Junior Europeans in Aarhus, Denmark, starting end of this week.

After two days without racing due to lack of wind, the Olympic Tornado class started trough on Tuesday. The national competitors chased each other, but lost  the lead to the French team. “We are still very happy. Besson started the last race with high risk on portside tack, and had the luck on his side to succeed with it. That was his plus”, said a satisfied Roland Gaebler who finished second overall, but first German team.

The keel-dinghy winners of the Travemuende week are called Frank Sothmann, Kirsten Sievers (displaced by Birger Blaschke) and Dusko Avanchovik. The trio around the helmsmen from Bornhoeved, Germany sailed in a thrilling finish in the streamline class and won with one point ahead of the team from Luebeck: Jan Hamester/Jan Dabelstein/Uli Hammerich. „The last day began with an unlucky race for us“, said Sothmann, „when we touched a competitor with our spinnaker and had to do our penalty turns. We than saw the fleet from behind”.

Now, the Travemuende week is carrying on for the first two finishers in the streamline class, while they are given a wild-card for the German match race Championship, which is sailed in the three-crew trapeze-keel-dinghy from Thursday on. Finals are scheduled for Sunday, July 27.
